Federal registration protects your rights under the federal Lanham Act, state registration protects you under the state law. It is wise to consider filing both. Federal filing can help document your first use in interstate commerce and affords many protections against confusingly similar marks. State protection might be more limited to a certain area and afford less protection just by itself with federal filing.
