How to get my security deposit back?
The landlord did not respond in the required 30 days of our vacating the premises; on the 31st day he responded with an email and a long list of items he allegedly spent on the rental (I assure you every item is debatable) and he is choosing not to refund our money back. I think he has acted in bad faith.

Sue the landlord: bring a case against him (probably in small claims court, where you can act as your own attorney, saving on legal fees) seeking return of the security deposit and alleging that you did not owe the money or do the damage he claims you did. He will have a chance to prove that you did; but if he can't show it, you should be able to get your money back.
