For clarification the police arrest you.  The prosecutor's office files the charges against you.  Generally, each state has time constraints for indicting a party or filing charges against a party that are mandated by statute.  The statutes vary from state to state.  If you think that you are going to be arrested and charged then I would seek counsel form an attorney in your area as to the technicalities of the matter, amongst other things.  You may need to have someone in your court, so to speak, anyway so you can ask then all the questions you can on your consultation and then see where it will go from there.  Good luck.
