What is the liability of a homeowner when someone is injured on their property?

Prior to his death, my late father hired a handyman to repair a roof of a storage shed. The shed was on the property of a house that he has title to. The handyman’w helper (his son) fell and broke his foot. We discovered that the homeowner’s insurance had lapsed on the property. Thus we (the sons) need to meet our obligations to the injured as self-insured owners. Our starting point to determine what we need to pay is to understand what a typical homeowner’s policy would have paid given these circumstances (the injury). I do not know whether the handyman was bonded or insured in any way. Can you provide feedback on our obligations to the injured?

Much more would have to be known about the incident.  Was the worker covered by a Worker's Comspensation Policy?  What was the nature of the employment contract?  Ws the landowner, in any way negligent and that begligence caused the injury?  Was the worker negligent inthe execution of his duties?
