If my husband and I have separated and he has had little contact with our children, is there a point at which his lack of involvement will affect his legal rights?
We’ve been separated for 10 months an live in different states. He does not contribute financially to the children, and his contact with the kids is minimal (he talks to the one to two times a month).

Given what you have written about the lack of contact of your husband with his children could very well in the future negatively affect any desires by him for visitation and custody. I suggest that you consult with a family law attorney about filing a petition for child support as to the husband since he is not paying any.
