You are not required to submit to a polygraph test as part of a criminal investigation. Refusing to take the test might not stop an investigation, but even if you submit to the test and "pass" it, that does not mean the police will stop investigating you. Don't let the detective con you into believing that he will leave you alone after a polygraph.

You should realize that the polygraph is often less about finding out whether you are lying and more about trying to make you nervous enough to say something that can be used against you or that can generate a lead for evidence.

If you're under investigation, you should consult with a criminal defense attorney in your jurisdiction.
