Can a former employer lie to customers about why I left

A customer from my former employer told me she was told I left the company for a
better job. When they actually fired me and I still have not found a job.

They are lying in a way that makes you look better--i.e. that you had good opportunity and took it, and not that you were fired (which often looks like you did something wrong). Therefore, there is nothing you can do about this: you can sue someone for defamation if they lie about you in a may the makes you look worse or damages your repuation, you can't sue over having your reputation improved.
