It may very well be a deal breaker because if the idea is to change your last name to avoid detection, your social security will follow you anyway (your credit report will still show your birth name and aliases and your criminal history possibly, as well). You really need an attorney to help you petition for a change in your last name if the issue is unrelated to your criminal record.
