What is considered reasonable accommodation for a short term contract employee?

We have an employee on a four week assignment that worked for 1 day and is now in the hospital for an unknown time. is it reasonable to replace him after 24 hours of not being able to work?

If he is not using paid time off to cover the absence or is not on short-term disability (which is very unlikely, if he is a short-term contract employee), you may replace him if he cannot or does not appear for work. An employer is only required to keep absent employees if and to the extent they use paid-time off (e.g. sick leave) or some government benefit (short term disability or FMLA leave) for the absence.
