What to do about an intestate estate?
My aunt had no Will and the case went to court. I was not told that I needed to file a claim but I submitted an affidavit to the counsel handling the case anyway. I did submit an affidavit of heirship, with all proper documentation, but never heard back from anyone when the case would be seen or settled. I live a different state than where the proceedings were being held. I contacted the lawyers recently, and they told me the estate was closed last year I’m not sure what my options are at this point. The estate funds are not with the state’s comptroller at this time. Should I look into hiring a lawyer or can I still handle the case on my own?

I think that your idea of getting an attorney in the state in which your aunt resided is a good idea at this point although it is unclear what options there may be. But the sooner the better considering there may be a statute of limitation issues. Good luck.
