What to do if there is a lien on my house from the previous owner because we were still paying for the property but after we finished paying the lien was never removed?
I have tried multiple times to ask him to remove it but he refuses on the grounds “that it’s not his problem”. He acknowledges that paid him but he doesn’t want to release the lien. How can I get him to release it? I am considering a lawsuit but since it has been 18 years since the purchase, I can’t find any proof that we paid. What should I do?

I suggest that you consult with a real estate attorney to draft a demand letter with a copy of a lien release for the prior owner to date, sign and return to you for recording. If such is not done, then you file suit against this person for a determination that the lien is retired by the court.
