If I’ll be starting an LLC as an foreigner working in the US on L1 visa, since I can’t have a second income due to the L1, am I at least allowed to “work for free” for my new company?
Can my company pay for my rent? since my apartment will be used as storage facility (to begin with). I should have my Green Card within 3-4 months

You cannot work for pay under the L1 visa that you have. However, you can put time into your company and not receive any pay. However, your company cannot pay your rent legally since such is disguised pay. I suggest that you defer any form of disguised compensation to you until you have your green card in hand.
