DUI convictions never drop off of your record; they are permanent. However, for sentencing puposes, there is something known as the "look back period". The way it works is that if you were convicted in a state with a 10 year look back period (typical), then any offense older than 10 years would not be considered by the court when imposing your penalty. You would in effect be sentenced as though any current conviction was your first. Of course, if a prior conviction was less than 10 years ago, then the sentence imposed for a current conviction would be more severe since it would be for a 2nd DUI.
