Can a property management company raise my rent on a verbally agreed lease before the lease term is up?

Can a property management company raise my rent on a verbally agreed lease before the lease term is up?

I had written lease that was up and I asked for a 6 month extension which they agreed to. I never got a written agreement from them but I continued to make the payment as normal and they accepted the payments but after the 4th month they raised the rent. Can they legally do that?
