If we broke off our engagement, can you pleas tell me for how long is my ex-fiance is liable for paying the rent?

We stayed togeher for just over 3 years and he always paid the rent.

As your ex-fiance your boyfriend is under no legal duty to pay the rent. As a co-tenant, however, he is. That is unless he is released from this obligation by your landord. Otherwise, for so long as he is on the lease, he must continue to pay the rent. If he doesn't then legal action can be taken against him but by the landlord, not you.
