Company History: Workmen’s Auto Insurance Company was founded in 1949 and is owned by the Shammas family, which also has auto dealerships and real estate holdings in the Los Angeles area. The company specializes in private passenger automobile coverage for higher risk drivers. Both auto liability and physical damage coverages are offered. The majority of policies are issued at the state minimum coverage amounts. A small amount of homeowner’s insurance, condo owner’s and renter’s insurance is also written in California. The company is licensed in 23 states, but is active in 11. About 38% of Workmen’s business in 2005 came from California, 24% from Florida and most of the remaining premiums are from Arkansas, Nebraska, Washington and Oregon.
