The company denies every claim and fights you before paying anything. It doesn’t matter if it is a test like an MRI or MRA (the company would rather you go to the emergency room), or an outpatient surgery recommended by three doctors. they simply won’t pay and will grind you until you concede defeat. THE WORST OF THE WORST!

I’ve only had Great West Insurance for nine days but I’m already frustrated. When I went to my MRI appt. today I found out it still hasn’t been authorized by Great West, even though my doctor has provided the info they requested. Apparently the only way to get a quick MRI through Great West is to go to the ER.

We were happy to receive health insurance through my husband’s new job. First, we decided to take care of my husband’s dental health, and already had spent around $800.00 in co-pays and deductibles for the first 3 visits to the dentist. My estimate so far that the insurance premiums with co-pays and deductibles constituted about 4.4% of his gross annual income (keep in mind that we only used dental last year and for only one person in our family).

Great West settled my claim in 1 month. Instead of a huge medical bill, I only paid my deductible and the rest was covered. My family then had free 100% coverage the rest of the calendar year!

This HC provider has been choosen by my company.
They sent latter stating that I used out of network provider and I had to pay most of the my medical expenses. I had to call customer service and point that this provider has been listed as “Great-West Healthcare Provider”. Then they sent a claim to be reviewed once again. This was few days ago and there are no news so far. This will be a nighmare as there are some more sergery claims/bills is on the way – I’m getting ready 🙁

Great-West is the worst insurance company in the industry. Holding claims for months at a time, website was never updated with current network of doctors, processing claims incorrectly…I could go on. I highly recommend that you never use this insurance company. They are conniving and fradualent.

My husband had an emergency appendectomy – it actually ruptured. Great West denied every part of this at least once. It has been more than 4 months and I am still fighting to get things paid. I have called the “help” line and all I get is the run-around! This is the worst insurance!

I had Great West PPO for almost 3 years through my company (this was the only choice) and I definitely have a very low opinion of this. Avoid if possible at all.
The company has a lot of inventive loopholes to avoid paying for anything and to leave you with a huge bill. This PPO makes you think 10 times before going to a doctor because of the copay and other special charges that show up to the point of making it useless (i.e. would have been much much cheaper for me to just not have any insurance at all)
I was able to fight off some unjust charges but that took 12+ months in some instances of calls to the company to navigate its bureaucracy.
The alternative name for this insurance is Great Worst.

Unprofessional and misleading. Do not honour the policy bought. They are not working in the clients best interest for medical care. Their only concern is to increase share value not payout clients who have paid into the program for over 28 yrs.

Definitely the worst health insurance I have dealt with. And unfortunately, as time goes on, more and more providers are refusing to work with Great West. This means that the inadequate and dangerous care I and many other have received is only getting worse.
If you have a choice, I would recommend using another health insurance company. If you have no choice, be prepared to spend and incredible amount of your time in incredibly frustrating communication with them for every single claim you have. ( And don’t really expect to be re-imbursed)

Every time I’ve called the company I’ve received a different answer. I canceled my policy because they started drafting two months of premium payments at one time after I was told that would not happen. I was also told I would receive a refund for the payment, but after two months the company is still dragging their feet.

They do not want to pay their claims. Request multiple forms, and the doctors notes. State they will use there doctor then stop payment. 1 month later they still have not set an appointment. Terrible service

This is the wortst health insurance company I have ever dealt with. They continuously deny all claims and I am still fighting with them for payment on a bill from a year ago. If you are offered a plan from this company, take your chances somewhere else.

We had a life insurance policy with them for 10 years, our policy was moved between at least two reps over the time, not a word, mailing or any other communication telling us about the change of contact information. Then all of a sudden our payment went form 20 to 70 dollars a month, by the time we could cancel the policy (red tape) they got an additional 2 months payments. Now there is no way to get a claim form to try to reccover or dispute the lost money!!!!!

This company appears to most proficient at stalling. We have been submitting claims for the last 6 months and not one has been paid, this includes the MRI that I had to obtain at one of Great West approved providers instead of the more compident and customer freindly professional I had originally choosen.

GW is the only financial services company that we deal with that still requires you to give your SS number over the phone. Their statements are indecipheral and their phone service is horrible — if you can get them to answer.

I am quite disappointed with Great West Life, as they change rules without notify their customers, and then try to charge money back to their customers. I have done my Speech therapy claims always (3 years) in the same way without any notice notifying about anything wrong with it. Now, all of the sudden I have been asked to pay back money, this means to me, that the rules changed after some years without notifying the customers as I was never notified before.
Then I have been getting few calls with not answers from them, and then I got a very confused and disappointed call today from Great West Life, I felt that in this call I was trying to be cheated by the agent, like when you go to the Flea Market and the seller starts to bargain with you… Asking first about $1000+ and then $100+… Then I asked to talk to her manager, but she said that there were not managers in the site at that moment, how can that be? Operating without a manager or a supervisor? What kind of company is Great West Life? This is not serious at all.

After two months of medical leave from my job, Great West has only paid (and late at that) for one month so far. Payments are supposed to be weekly-67% of my wage. The person working on my claim has been away at different times and had noone else working on this claim. Last call to them was last week when they said they would pay the second month in one lump sum, but, when is hard to say…she said it will take a few days and they were working on it the day before I called. What a crock! Sounds like stall tactics to me. I will not work for any company who has this provider!! It is easier to quit my job and collect holiday pay for the remainder of my medical leave and look for another job.

Terrible customer service almost impossible to speak with case manager until they need to speak with you. Received one payment then nothing for two months as case worker unable to calculate how much they owed me… still chasing payment for July and AUgust 2011 no response. Returned to work and because GWL did not close case not paid correctly and GWL not returning any calls. After 9 months off sick after serious accident am in severe financial difficulty due to incompetence of GWL who incidentally will not use last name in communications and will not release email address. I wonder why

I have never called customer service number on back of card where someone has answered. They indicate they will return call within 24 hours. This has never happened. Recently I did receive a return call some 1-2 weeks after my initial call to customer service. The caller left a voice mail message with their first name only no mention of the company they were calling from and when they indicated that if I still had a problem to return the call they left no number to call. The number on my caller ID indicated not in servce. Claims are never paid in a timely manner and routinely denied when they should be paid.

Horrible at customer service NO in network providers for basic healthcare and counseling. NEVER use this company if you get the choice. They have been supposedly merging with CIGNA for years but not even the providers know what is going on. Bottom line you pay them they sit on claims and find a reason not to pay or go as slooow as possible. Every provider is out of network so the consumer pays more no exceptions for the crappy network like other insurance. I am looking at purchasing healthcare on my own. They must have some salespitch to get companys to purchase this load of manure for their employess. BS and games. If Obama does anything right with legislation it will be to get rid of rip off companies that compromise their customers health and call it healthcare coverage.

Horrible company to deal with willdeny anything if they can get away with it be prepared to spend hours andhours providing them with information and trying to take to anyone there. My husband was paralyzed because of a back surgery gone wrong and was denied loss of use and wheelchair benefits. The insurance broker that sold the policy also did not do his job correctly and never raised the NEM when it was available and we ended up with less than half of my husbands wage and were forced to apply for CPD then they deduct that off of their disability payment. He ended up with only 400.00 per month from GWL and they refuse to allow him physiotherapy even though it is part of their policy. They would only pay up to 1500.00 for a wheelchair which costs 5000.00 on average so he had to get a used demo model.Then they tried to force him to take a online course which is not accredted to force him back to work because he could lift his arms over his head. He is a automotive mechanic. They are rude crude uncaring and unjust. It is all about how much money they can save the company and how much they can deny. You pay premiums for years so you are protected in case of a tragedy like this and to become paralyzed live with severe pain and spasms then have to deal with GWL. It is just not right.

The worst health insurance company ever in existence. Had a claim in November 2009 which was continually denied and went through countless appeals before they finally settled TWO YEARS LATER In the meantime ever since this nightmare started in 11/2009 they have been using outfit called ACS Recovery Services to try to get reimbursed from any third party payer to cover the minute amounts they did pay. Everyone I know that has used GW has had trouble and you can see that from most of the reviews.

This company is un organized and unprofessional. It takes a long time to talk to people that can can actually help you and when you do talk to the right person they are unable to help you. The only way the service works if you give them your money and they do not provide any service to you. Basically they are stealling from you and do not provide a service. Stay away from this company. Worse customer service ever. Even worse than cell phone companies.

Not only was I treated me with disrespect and lied too in my own home I was forced to hire a lawyer who stated this is common practice for this organization. Great West Life should be avoided I have bein insured with them for many years due to my union agreement I’m working for a large canadian corporation. Unfortunately I can confirm pretty much all of the horror stories I have red on this site. I have and many of my collegues have received similar treatement. Even the umbudsman of the Great West has tricks to delai complaints and pretend they did not receive letters and important documentation… Do not give them your business

My wife has Great West Life through her work for LTD. When she made a claim due to illness we had our GP two surgeons and and a GI doctor all say she can’t work in her condition. There usual tactic would be to ask for some form from our doctor. We’d submit it call them in a week or two and were told they hadn’t had a chance to review her file yet maybe in a few weeks. Then they call us up and request something else and the cycle continues. Going on 5 months with still no income. Meanwhile they collect their premium’s every month. Their bleeding us dry. Avoid them at all costs.

Have this health policy through my employer. Very horrible to deal with. Have caused my family tons of grief and pain with trying to get legit claims processed. Very uncaring reps and they could care less if you can’t feed you kids or pay your bills even if it’s their fault I don’t understand how a company like this stays in business

I had applied for ltd for ptsd which was triggered from job. This has been an absolute scary time for me dealing with severe depression anxiety and flashbacks. I was denied my claim. The stress from no income and the bills mounting was adding to my mental health issues. I am now 2 months without any income and in jeopardy of loosing our house etc. But these people dont care. I call but no call back. The game seems to be to see how long a person can endure hardship. It is criminal what these people do to people suffering from a disability. The only punishment i wish on these people is to experience what i am experiencing and then you may have a bit more compassion for what people are experiencing. Remember karmas a bitch

My workplace chose this company and changed to them as opposed to any of the others out there. Apparently they are all the same I remember the last one as being no better. I have a claim with them from a short term disability to a now long term disability. If you can’t breathe, you can’t work. One would thinkIt has been the worst experience of my life. I found with no help from my workplace Health and Welfare committee and from being thoroughly frustrated with them that there is an ombudsman for them and although it takes time to get a reply, I did feel somewhat satisfied, the first time The second time I realised that the contract written between GWL and my employer gave them certain rights and tends to leave me hanging Just Google Great West Life Ombudsman and write them a letter. This was a life insurance policy my mother took out to help pay for her final expenses. I called the company multiple times to get a copy of the policy…they stated it couldn’t be emailed and had to be mailed but it never arrives. Now that Mom has passed away, I called to get a claim form. They state that it will take 7-10 days before they can email me the claim form and that they can’t tell me if it will take a week or a year to process the claim once they receive the claim form and death certificate back. So much for helping to pay for the final expenses. We will be lucky to get anything from them.

Was on LTD for mental health issues and chronic pain ..they were good to get me back to work however they deny chronic pain it is the same disorder >Went back to work employer requested more easeback which was denied .I wasn’t placed in position that I had applied for duty to accomodate ..>And cut off LTD prematurely…didn’t get the job and deemed unable to work in occupation

Bought 15 year term policy. The 15 years just ended. They just drafted quadruple my monthly payment. I called and they said I’m now in my 16th year of my 15 year policy. They said it my responsibility to cancel the policy after fifteen years. Slimy.

Paid my dues for over 7 years for employee benefits. There rep came to our company and assured us and I quote Don’t worry, if anything happens we’ll take care of you No problems. Over this 7 year period they recieved over 16, 800.00 dollars on my behalf. In 2016 I was in a bad car accident and ended up with severe post concussion syndrome. They did everything they could to deny me and left me in the dust. So I lost my 26 dollar an hour job because of my condition and couldn’t drive a truck anymore. Now I survive on a meager provincial disability stipend as I can’t work yet. Don’t do business with these people, they are your typical greedy self-centered corporation. They lie and don’t deliver what they promise. Enjoy my 16K I paid to you…

My work just switched to Great West Life Assurance sic. It took two months for anyone to issue us cards, or even mention the change. After two months we were told to go to the website with any and all inquiries. The secrecy around how the premiums are calculated makes me very suspicious. No one will tell me how they arrive at the monthly premiums. They just say here’s what you owe every month and don’t provide any justification for it. My employer, the insurance broker they hired, and Great West Life all claim that this information is classified and they cannot tell me. I am the one paying for this. I will either be told how the premiums are calculated, or I will go to part-time or change jobs. I refuse to just be told an arbitrary number is my premium without any math to back it up. As my math teacher always said, if you don’t show your work explain how you arrived at that answer then you don’t get the marks. If they want to keep the math secret, they will get nothing from me.

after reading the reviews about this company, I found out that I am not the only one that has problems with this company. They are liars, they say one thing and then do another. Customer service is not intelligent enough to handle complicated claims. Even if the doctors send them all the information they request, they still don’t understand, or maybe they pretend not to understand. They like to cut corners. This is the worst insurance company I have encountered. Don’t get involved with this insurance company if you don’t like being upset and high blood pressure. We had had two people pass that had life insurance policies with this company. 10 people were listed as beneficiaries, 5 men and 5 women. Only the 5 men have received their cheques. The women have not received cheques, and have been given the run around, told there is no such life insurance account, to being told the cheques were sent out, each phone call the response is different. They are a sexist company. We all closed down our personal accounts with them. Would trust a squirrel with money over this company.

Even after pre-determination of expenses they still put my claim on hold and I had to fight with them. They have never covered any of my meds…when asked why they said we just dont cover them. My Doctor has appealed, I have appealed and they STILL refuse coverage. I am going to opt out of my benefits with my company if I can and buy my own. Its more expensive yes, but I have had such terrible experiences personally I would not recommend if you need any kind of medical or dental support. Sadly.

Absolutely terrible company to deal with. Very unfortunate that my work gives me benefits with them. I spent 500 on glasses eye exam which under my plan ARE covered and I get a letter saying that my insurance was supposedly terminated even though it was not as I am still working for my employer and the coverage is still active. Customer service is also very unhelpful and it can take weeks if not months to get certain claims processed. Avoid at all costs

Provided GWL with all dr reports paid for out of pocket, and required paperwork. Filled it out honestly and completely. Received short term disability,when they were told my injury was permanent and I would not be able to resume my date of accident job, they reviewed my file called to tell me they had made an error I wasnt elidigable for my payments and demand I pay back the money while I am unemployed and unable to work. They made a mistake and I am now on the hook for five thousand dollars due to thier error. Rude staff took 25 weeks to discover thier error and I am suppose to fix it. If I had done my job like they have done theirs I would have been fired for incompetence. Most unprofessional company ever.

Had a knee fracture that required me to be non weight bearing for 2 months. Great west refused to pay for any mobility devices except crutches even though we were initially told they would cover a wheelchair , brace and bath chair.

Their customer service is P-O-O-R, they seem to have a problem sending out invoices in a timely manner so that payment can be submitted on time. I have now wasted about ninety minutes and all I want to do is receive a premium notice and pay it in a timely manner

I’ve submitted a Short-Term disability 3 times in 3 different manners online, via Canada Post, fax because no one at GWL will confirm receipt, processing, or stage of review. Absolutely no one will get back to me. It blows my mind.

I was insured though Great West-Life. I had prescription coverage. My partner has a neurological disorder and required non cosmetic botox. We filed the claim online and were informed that we required special permission from our doctor. We got the special paperwork filled out, received a letter confirming that it was now covered by Great West-Life, and refiled the paperwork. They again rejected it because the doctor used a generic version of the botox. This was clear on our initial claim. Our coverage finished and I spent hours on the phone trying to get them to honour the prescription. Their phone staff said they would call back but never did. They clearly just waited until my patience ran out. I would not recommend them.

I have had my life insurance policy since 1985 and I would never recommend Great West as a carrier. It seems as though they dont want one to renew their policy. They send you a a lapsed due statement saying you owe say 650 and then you get a premium notice a week later staying you owe 450. When I called them to ask why the difference they say it is because I havent told them to change my statement and they cant change the billing because the contract wont let them. I am canceling my policy because it is so frustrating dealing with them. In reading some of the other comments I see that Im not the only one complaining. Good luck to anyone that has to deal with Great West Life. Im calling the Better Business Beaural to loge a complaint and see if there is away to get a class action lawsuit against them
