You can legally draft (write) a will yourself, but you must be careful to obey ALL the requirements about how it is witnessed, signed, and notarized--a failure to do so will result in the will being invalid. Also, wills can be rather tricky or technical to do right, so if you draft it incorrectly, even if it is valid, it will not leave your assets to the persons or institutions (e.g. charities) you want them to go to. A lawyer can draft a will for a few hundred dollars (feel free to ask lawyers for the cost in advance, before signing up with them)--if your estate isn't worth a few hundred dollars to make sure the will is done correctly, then it may not be worthwhile having a will, but instead letting it pass by intestate succession (the rules on who gets what, if there is no will).
