Small claims courts are one of the many different kinds of courts set up in each state to handle specific types of cases. As the name suggests, small claims are legal claims in which a lesser amount of money is at stake. Usually in cases of personal property damage, a breach of contract, landlord-tenant disputes, and other incidents that caused money damages. Each state sets a limit on the amount of money that can be sought as a remedy in small claims court, usually around $5,000. There are numerous benefits bringing a case to a small claims court, including smaller fees (there could be a filing fee), typically no lawyers (although you can hire a claims attorney for legal advice or representation), typically cases are a no jury trial, and the claims case process is fairly quick, so legal disputes have swifter justice. Although small claims court can seem like a complicated process, it does not have to be.
