Wht to do about a bogus carpet cleaning charge?
I suddenly heard for the first time from an apartment complex that we owed for dirty carpet that needed to be replaced. We left there 2 years ago (they also tried to claim several other charges that luckily we were able to provide receipts showing they were untrue debts). The carpet was spotless when we left but we have no proof of it’s condition. Now, they are threatening to report us to a collection agency. Apparently, they are under new management and the folks inspected our apartment are no longer there. What are our rights? What are their guidelines? They had our forwarding address and yet this is the first we have heard of any problems.

Given the late period of notice (two plus years) where presumably there were subsequent tenants in the unit after you you should advise the apartment complex that you have no intention on paying for carpet cleaning charges necessitated by subsequent tenants. Make sure you keep a copy of the letter sent to the apartment complex.
