Does a manager have the right to obtain a copy of my college transcripts?
Recently at work, a new position opened that required a minimum of 16 college credit hours. We had to produce college transcripts for the human resources department, who would then photocopy those official transcripts and give them to one of our managers. I was told that the manager would call HR, and HR would verify that we had the required amount of credits from viewing our transcripts, but that managers had no right to view our private employee file or any information within it located in HR. I know if I am using the tuition assistance my employer offers, I am required to show my employer (not my manager) my grades. However, I am not using their help.

A college transcript is not considered a private or confidential document by the law. Therefore, there is nothing illegal about a manager seeing your transcripts. It may be a violation of the company's own internal policy, but that is not a matter for the courts.
