Company History: Utica Mutual Insurance Company (the lead insurer of the Utica National Insurance Group), a New York state-based commercial and personal lines property/casualty insurance group, traces its beginnings to 1914. The Utica National Insurance Group operates through a fleet of 19 companies. The group’s life insurance subsidiary, Utica Life, was sold in 2006 because the strategic decision of The Utica National Group was to focus its efforts on the property and casualty business. Commercial lines are targeted to specialized markets that include schools, religious institutions, printing companies, wholesalers and agents (errors and omissions insurance). The group also offers personal lines coverage such as private passenger automobile and homeowner’s. The most significant lines of business are commercial multi-peril, workers compensation, commercial auto liability and other business liability coverage. In 2009 Utica National was listed on Ward’s Top 50 list for property-casualty insurance organizations. Utica National employs about 1,400 people nationwide.
