Is it legal to force a nurse to work 24 hours straight due to staffing issues?

The hospital I work for is not staffing our unit and we are being mandated to work 24 hours straight.

In CT, any nurse may agree to work additional hours, however their refusal to accept any additional hours shall not be grounds for discrimination, termination or any other penalty or employment decision adverse to them. That having been said, there exceptions. For exemple, in the case of an institutional emergency that in the opinion of the hospital administrator will significantly reduce the number of nurses available for a scheduled work shift. At this point, you should consult direcly with a local attorney. They can go over the details of the situation with you and help you determine what rights you have under specific state law.
