What are my rights if I have a former employer telling my present employer untruthful things about me?

Is this acceptable?

You may sue them for defamation defamation is the knowing or intentional making of untrue factual statements which damage another's reputation. 
Note true facts, even if harmful, are not defamation, and anyone may tell them to others and opinions, like "John/Jane Doe is the worst employee I ever had," are also not defamation only untrue facts are defamation.
In a defamation lawsuit, you could seek monetary compensation and/or a court order requiring the former employer to stop doing this.
