Company History: West American Insurance Company is a property and casualty insurance company licensed in Indiana that is part of the Ohio Casualty group of insurance companies. West American traces its beginnings to a California company founded in 1923. The license was moved to Indiana in 1995 and the current name was adopted then. The administrative offices are in Fairfield, Ohio, the location of Ohio Casualty’s headquarters. Ohio Casualty Corp. is the publicly traded holding company for the 6 companies that make up the Ohio Casualty Group of insurers. The primary products of the Group are personal auto insurance and homeowner’s insurance, commercial property, commercial auto, workers’ compensation. The Group sells through about 3,400 independent agencies in more than 40 states, but 30% of 2005 net premiums written were from 3 states: New Jersey (11.6%), Pennsylvania (9.4%) and Kentucky 8.7%). Commercial lines (including primarily workers’ compensation, commercial auto insurance, and general liability insurance) accounted for about 57% of the Group’s net premiums written in 2005. Typical commercial lines customers are small businesses with a few employees that need packaged products of coverages. In 2005, the commercial lines customer group generated about one half of its premiums from contractors and artisans, 19% from merchants, 19% from service businesses and 6% from other businesses. The Group’s personal lines segment accounts for about 33% of premiums. These policies are for personal auto and homeowner’s insurance sold to individuals. The specialty lines account for about 10% of premiums and consist of commercial umbrella policies and fidelity and surety coverages. These products are sold primarily to policyholders who have purchased commercial automobile and general liability policies and need additional coverage for higher limits or items not covered under the basic policy. As of May 8, 2007, Liberty Mutual announced that it planned to buy the Ohio Casualty Corporation. The purchase would increase Liberty Mutual’s distribution through independent agents by about one third.
