What to do if you were falsely accusesd of doing somthing on the job that you did not do?

My mom has worked in the nursing business for well over 30 years. However, has since retired but occasionally works through nursing agencies at different nursing homes when they are needing additional assistance. She was confronted the other day by the agency office manager due to being reported that she went into another nurse’s purse looking for candy. Absolute lie. Has never and will never go thorugh anyone else’s belongings. What should she do about this?

Why does she need to do anything about it? By that, I mean if (1) she has not been reported to the police for theft or similar; and (2) the office manager has not defamed her (see below); then there is nothing that needs action. You can't control what a person thinks; if this manager has a wrong impression of your mom, even if this particular manager doesn't want to hire her again, you can't do anything about that.

If the manager has stated to other people, however, that you mom went through another nurse's purse, and if that is indeed untrue, then the manager may have defamed your mom. Defamation is the public (even to one third party) false factual statement that damages a person's reputation or makes others not want to work with her. If you think this has happened, your mom should consult with an attorney. Good luck.
