What responsibility does a husband have for medical expenses incurred by his wife?

Under California law, when a wife requires emergency medical treatment, including
inpatient hospitalization, what responsibility does her husband have for those
medical expenses? Does the answer change if they have been living apart, but
there is no separation agreement or divorce decree?

Thanks

A spouse is not responsible for elective medical treatment but can be held responsible for emergency treatment: the law expects and requires spouses to support each other with necessary expenses. That the spouses are living apart does not affect this: all that matters is whether they are married or not.
