What is vesting?

Vesting is defined as setting aside money for yourself in a retirement plan that remains yours even if your employment ends. Once an employee has gone through the proper process of vesting, vested benefits are awarded regardless of termination or resignation. For example, an employee that invests in a 401k will always receive that money back after employment.
