Job abandonment is not showing up to work. If someone fails to show up for work, that can be treated as either that person's resignation (you can quit by actions as well as by words; not showing up for work shows your intention to not work there) or as grounds for termination "for cause" (absenteeism; for doing something wrongful; not merely poor performance or not fitting in or not being liked by your boss). Both resigning and being fired "for cause" make you ineligible for (that is, unable to receive) unemployment benefits. So if someone did abandon their job, they cannot get unemployment.
