If a 21 year old buys some weed without a doctors recommendation what can happen?
I only see a law saying the person selling it gets a misdemeanor.

Under Section 18.2-250 of your states code (its laws, that is):
"A. It is unlawful for any person knowingly or intentionally to possess a controlled substance unless the substance was obtained directly from, or pursuant to, a valid prescription or order of a practitioner while acting in the course of his professional practice, or except as otherwise authorized by the Drug Control Act (§ 54.1-3400 et seq.)."
So knowingly possessing--e.g. buying--marijuana is a crime in your state. It is a class 1 misdemeanor, which means you could do up to 1 year in jail and/or be fined.
