It depends on whether or not you were at fault for the accident.  If the accident was the fault of the other driver, then the other driver's auto insurance should cover the damages which were a result of the accident.  If the accident was your fault, you can be held personally liable for the damages to the other vehicle and for any personal injuries anyone in the other vehicle may have suffered.  This means you can be sued in civil court for the cost of the accident.  Also, if the police were involved, you likely will receive a citation for failure to carry insurance.
