What are the consequences of receiving a citation for failure to pay rail fare?
I know you go to court and have to pay a fine, but will it go on the permanent record? Also if there was a misunderstanding and you didn’t intend to violate this law, then is there any way that the case can be dismissed?

Under the laws of all states in this country if you are convicted of the charge of failing to pay rail fare such is typically a misdemeanor and you end up with a permanent criminal record. Possibly the court may allow you into its diversion program for the charge. If so, and you sucessfully complete it there would be no criminal conviction on your record. As such, you should consult with a criminal defense attorney about the matter to be on the safe side.
