small business liability

I started building unique lamps and selling them at craft fairs, farmers markets etc. Do I need to take any steps to protect myself from liabilities?

1) Set up an LLC (limited liability company) and conduct the business through it: having an LLC will protect you personally (and your personal assets) from the vast majority of business- or product-related liability. You should be able to file and create an LLC online, through your state's department of state (Secretary of State). Here's a link that may provide useful information: http://www.kssos.org/business/business.html
2) Have liability insurance for your business to defend it and/or pay for any judgments. Business liability insurance can be surprisingly inexpensive, especially if you take a high deductible. Contact a reputable insurnace agent or broker to discuss.
