If I signed a lease for a month-to-month agreement on an apartment but now the owner now wants to renovate and kick everyone out, what are my rights?

They mentioned paying me the money I’ve put into the apartment so far as well as other expenses. Is there anything I can do?

If you are a month-to-month tenant, as you indicate you are, the landlord may give you 30 days notice terminating your tenancy, including so he can renovate the building, just as you could give the landlord 30 days notice that you are terminating your tenancy, so you could, say, move elsewhere. That is what a month-to-month tenancy means; either side may terminate it on 30 days notice.
