First, a Public Defender is a "lawyer", and most are well trained at what they do. You must ultimately decide what you feel more comfortable with. If you chose to retain an attorney for criminal representation, you may get more of a hands-on relationship as Public Defenders generally handle larger caseloads, but again the decision depends on your level of comfort. What you want is a attorney who is going to be honest, dependable, aggressive, and effective in placing your fiance in the best position possible for his criminal charges.

Laws may vary from state to state, and sometimes change. Tiny variations in the facts, or a fact not set forth in a question, often can change a legal outcome or an attorney's conclusion. Unlike the information in the Answer(s) above, upon which you should NOT rely, for personal advice you can rely upon we suggest you retain an attorney to represent you.
