Whatare my rightsif acompany is refusing to provide me proof of a debt I do not remember?
This collections agency is refusing to provide me with proof of my debt, just saying I incurred it about 4 years ago. The are also asking me for my private information over the phone. I never received any letters requesting payment prior to getting served this paper. The agency says they previously served me, but I never received anything prior to this. They described the person physically whom they say they served it to, no such person has been in my house. What should I do?

They are lying. Do not affirm the debt or that you are the one who owes money (i,.e. the debtor). Immediately stop answering the telephone and get your free cedit reports (you are entitled to one free one each year from the three credit reporting agencies through a specific website). Then you essentially look at the items on your credit report and see if the collections matter is there or the original creditor. Then file a complaint with your credit reporting agencies if this item is on there!

You need to be careful that you are not being targeted as part of a scam. Many people these days contact others claiming that a debt is owed from years ago wanting payment but not able to provide documentation showing that the debt was ever incurred.
Do not give that person any personal information about you. Get as much information about the person calling you, phone number, address, name of business, and address. When received, contact your county's district attorney's office about the situation. Good luck.
