I am a California attorney, so do check with an attorney in Washington, but my understanding is that a potential employer may ask for the name of your current employer and what time period you have been working there. They can ask you for the ther information, but you do not have to provide it. As for the background check, if the position for which you are being considered is a high security job, they can check your background for criminal activity.
