What to do if you continue to be billed for a paid off account?

I paid off a debt and ask them to close my account. However my request was refused, at least until I until send them my name address and phone number – which they already have on file. Now they are sending me a bill for the monthly membership fee. Do I have to pay this fee even though I paid them off and when they refused to close my account?

I think that it may be time for you to file a complaint against the company.  Are they a credit card company?  You said "membership" here in your question.  Is it a health club account that you paid off?  If they are a local business or a business that does business in your state contact your state attorney general's office on the matter.  There is generally a consumer fraud division that will take the infirmation and help investigate the matter on your behalf.  Call them or go online and file a complaint.  You should get together all the proof that you have regarding the account and your payments in case you need to write a history of fwhat happened and you need to prove your case.  Good luck to you.
