If my friend has an on-line store for which he has been looking for women to model merchandise and put their pictures on the website, shouldn’t he have them sign a release?

Would he be bound to pay them some sort of a royalty fee?

Yes, he should have them sign a release giving up all right, title, and interest to the photographs; allowing him to use them however he would; and acknowledging that whatever he paid them to model is all the money or compensation to which they are entitled. This would be a short and simple agreement to draft, but will help protect him against later claims for additional compensation, or attempts to stop him from using or reusing the photos.
