If my non-compete says I cannot contact any customer for 2 years but I want to work for 1 without interfering with my prior employer, will this hold up?

Under the laws of most states in this country, non-compete clauses involving former employees are strictly scrutinized in that there is a public policy that all people in this country are encouraged to hold a job.

If the non-compete clause that you have written about does not pertain to you selling a business where you were simply an employee with the holder of the clause, you are entitled under the law to get employment with a former customer. You would not be competing against the former employer. You would be working for wages for the former customer. That would be allowed.
