If my sister went to the dentist and the arm handle of the dentist chair was broken so it cut through her pants and her thigh is bleeding, should we sue?

They say that they were aware that the chair has been broken for a few days.

You can only sue for for an amount of money in a case like this equal to sum of the out-of-pocket (not paid by insurance) medical costs; lost wages, if any; and IF the injury results in weeks or more of disability or life impairment, some amount of pain and suffering--though this amount will be modest unless your sister is faced with months or years of pain or disability. So say that your sister incurs $100 in emergency room co-pay and $50 in prescriptions as her out-of-pocket medical costs, doesn't miss work, and is fine after a week or so. The most she could get in a lawsuit would be $150, which is not worth the time or cost of suing.
