What to do if my stepdaughter recently died and her housemates looted her possessions which possibly included credit cards?

Her father does not know what cards she might have carried. Are we liable for fraudulently incurred debt? Are we liable for debt incurred prior to death? Her father is not a co-signer on any financial documents. What steps do we need to take to protect ourselves?

You and your spouse would not be liable for your stepdaughter's credit card bills. I suggest that based upon what you have written that you contact law enforcement in the locality where your stepdaughter was living when she passed and make a police report as to what you suspect has happened.
