No, the house is not paid off.  If your house was subject to a mortgage, his death doesn't do anything but create an issue with the mortgage company if you are not on the mortgage. If you are on the mortgage, you need to update the loan with a death certificate to show you are the only surviving borrower. If there is no mortgage and you are not on the deed, then you need have your husband's estate quit claim this home to you or file in probate court. The house deed needs to be transferred to you in a proper chain of title in the registry of deeds.
