Does this sound normal and is there any advantage to any party for dragging it out this long?

No it does not sound normal. But estates can indeed be open for a long time if there is litigation involved plus large assets, etc. If there are advantages to keepng it open they are difficult to ascertain in this type of forum. Sometimes assets are held on to to wait for an increase in value before selling but that could backfire in other ways. You have a right to inquire and an accounting. Do so.
