What to do if my entire family strongly suspects the over-prescribing of pain killers to my mother by her doctor?

Since she will not admit it and their business is protected by privacy, how can he be investigated? My mother’s condition is worsening as she alienates herself from everyone.

A good starting point is to contact Adult Proctective Services.   Here is a link for the APS in New Jersey:  http://www.state.nj.us/health/senior/aps.shtml    This can sometimes get someone immediately involved in her business without her getting hard feelings about someone trying to take away her freedom. Another option is to file a petition to become her guardian so that you can help with medical and financial issues.  Really think about it before you go this route.  Many seniors feel threatened with these types of actions and will tend to shut out family members after they have come in with involuntary petitions.
