If a company asks for employees to volunteer to help out, then its typically OK. However, once ssuch time is required then an employee is no longer a volunteer. If the company says that an employee must help out or be disciplined, they must be paid for their time. Additonally, if it is something that the employer would otherwise have to pay for, then an employee should be paid as well.
If your current employer is making you do free work that you think may be illegal, you should contact your state's department labor or consult directly to an employment law attorney about your rights.
