What to do if my daughter accidentally backed into an unattended car when she was leaving a parking lot but thought it was the curb, so she left the scene?

She thought it was a concrete curb she hit, so she left not knowing she had hit the car. The police showed up at our house and said she committed a misdemeanor and gave her a ticket and told her to appear in court in 30 days. She has never been in trouble ever. Should we invest in a lawyer or should we go in and hope the truth will minimize the punishment. She is such a good child and I don’t think she deserves the misdemeanor charge against her.

Definitely hire an attorney--and make sure it's a local lawyer who handles matters like this in this court. Above and beyond the lawyer's knowledge, which itself is invaluable, local attorneys who know all the key players (e.g. prosecutor, judge) often get better treatment for their clients than the client would have gotten on her own.
