If the lawyer will not "get back to you," it could be as innocent as the attorney is overworked--though he or she would still be violating professional responsibility--it could be the attorney has suffered a personal crises, or  it could possibly be malfeasance. First, try calling--if the lawyer won't even speak with you or give you an answer you find acceptable, send the attorney a letter in some way you can prove delivery stating what you're looking for--your portion of the settlement, a status update, whatever. Give the attorney a reasonable but short time to respond--say 5 business days from receipt. If the attorney still doesn't respond, contact either the state bar assocation or the office the state court which regulates attorneys, tell them the situation, and ask for advice and assistance.
