There are certain rules regarding paycheck deductions. Federal law allows employers to deduct the cost of supplying and maintaining a uniform (e.g. having it cleaned and/or pressed) from an employee's paycheck. This holds true as long as the employee's wages after the deduction don't fall below the minimum wage. Therefore, in the event that an employee earns the minimum wage, the employer may not require them to pay for a uniform (either through payroll deductions or otherwise).

That having been said, some state laws are more strict. They prohibit employers from charging employees or requiring employees to buy a uniform that has a company logo or can't be used as "street wear". And, still other states don't allow employers to charge employees for uniforms under any conitions.

That all having been said, an employee should be advised prior to employment of their employer's policy regarding uniforms.

Absent a written document signed by you where your employer could debit your pay check for the cost of your uniform, the employer under the laws of all states in this country cannot do what he or she is doing with respect to your pay check.
