Mileage and car allowance reimbursement?

I work in sales and my employer doesn’t reimburse us for mileage when using our
cars for a sales meeting. We are taught to keep track of our miles and submit
through our taxes at the end of the year. Is this common practice in the state of
California?

There is no legal requirement that a business reimburse workers for mileage. Therefore, unless you have a union agreement or employment contract that mandates such a reimbursement, you have no claim here. The fact is that a company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). That having been said, you might be able take a tax deduction for any money that you spent on gas for your job.
